About glaze

About Us

Welcome to glaze, a paint your own pottery and glass fusing studio. glaze is located in Thiensville, Wisconsin. We are a hands-on art studio offering 4 types of art medium: pottery, glass fusing, raw clay, and Lilly Ollo (silver clay).

You are welcome to come in at any time without a reservation to create a piece of art. We are extremely kid friendly so don’t hesitate to bring in the little ones. We also cater to groups of 6 or more with a reservation. Consider our very popular Birthday parties or bring in a group of friends for art therapy. Scout troops, church groups, schools, and corporate team building events occur in the studio on a regular basis. The possibilities are endless.

We invite you to bring on the creativity or we’ll bring it to you!

New Location in Theinsville!

How this location came to pass...

Glaze Pottery Studio

As all good ideas begin, glaze started as a potential plan in the back of Kristina and Phil's minds. glaze is becoming well known as the place to go for birthday parties, bridal/bachelorette celebrations, corporate team building and fun family outings in the greater Milwaukee area. As hands-on owners, Kristina and Phil are frequently in the studio after hours preparing for the next event or newest product release. There always seems to be something that requires finishing, firing or fusing!
Phill & Kristina
Kristina is in and out throughout the day picking things up to go to storage or dropping off the shopping list of supplies. She regularly attends Chamber events and is always looking for new ways to support the community or participate in marketing ideas. It's difficult to get things done while the studio is open it's just too tempting to socialize with all the amazing customers! The Eckert's three children keep Kristina's chauffeur license valid as she runs to all the children's extracurricular activities, but she wouldn't trade her active children or the amazing glaze studio for anything else! It's all the things she loves, pulling in all directions. No worries... it's good chaos! :)

Phil still really enjoys his late nights closing out - Lol. Don't be fooled... it's the only time he gets to listen to the music he wants or to sit in the quiet as the CPA in him does the work. glaze wouldn't be where it's at without the many hours Phil puts in during the evening at glaze after working his full time day job. Phil is the backbone of sense to all the creative craziness that goes on in the studio.  Phil is in charge of the glass room and the kilns, although he has been turning more of that responsibility over to the more than competent glaze staff. Go Dyan, Connie, J9, and Heather!!! All in all the past 7 years have been very emotionally rewarding. The Eckerts look forward to the next phase of their glaze journey in the Thiensville studio.

Many of the wonderful staff people you will meet at glaze are artists, teachers, and art students. They can help you find your inner artist and show you easy ways to make your pottery/glass creation something you can be proud to own or give as a gift.

DyanDyan - We are fortunate having someone like Dyan in the studio almost daily! She is one of the most well rounded people I know. Her creativity explodes into photography, graphic design, culinary arts, hair, and massage. She is always experimenting with new concepts and ideas for the studio. Dyan is amazing when it comes to creativity with glass. She has designed some pretty incredible auction pieces one of which raised $1,500 for the Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Research Center. She was instrumental in the decision to expand into larger space, and I quote: "The risk to remain would be greater than the risk to change. If we don't grow then we may not continue to blossom.” Look for the red curls and the decorated apron, or just ask a question and see who knows the answer.

KariKari - As glaze's naturally caffeinated artist of the written word, Kari's enthusiasm is infectious. Kari has the most unbelievable talents when it comes to handwriting as well as custom painting. There is rarely a piece painted by Kari that doesn't get a squeal of excitement from the kiln room. She is the go to girl for classroom creations. Working Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the school year fits her lifestyle. We’re happy to say that aside from a short hiatus, Kari has been with us the longest and has worked in all three locations.

LindseyLindsey - This bright, cheery, amazing girl has literally grown up with glaze. Having started here in 8th grade, she is now a senior at Living Word High School in Jackson. Lindsey was a regular painter at glaze when we started encouraging her to work for us. Her maturity and overall presence fooled us to think she was older. It all worked out rather well though. She has gone from a few hours to regular weekend hours when she's not out on the volleyball court. She is a genuine gift to us and we love every moment we can have her here. Lindsey does an amazing job with kids' birthday parties. Stop by and meet her sometime and you'll see how her cheery disposition can be contagious!

MarleeMarlee started working here because the staff loved her so much they practically adopted her. She is a Junior at Cedarburg High School and can be seen playing tennis and hanging with friends when she's not at glaze. Even though she's young, she's a great fit and loves working Birthday parties and doing face-painting. You'll be sure to point Marlee out among our staffers with her bright red hair.

LisaLisa is a familiar face to glaze as a customer and supporter who became one of us when we transitioned into our Thiensville location. We are thrilled having Lisa on board as our Frogtender. This means she is in charge of the fun room up front where we serve wine, beer, sodas, drinks, and snacks. Her years of marketing and event planning experience are exactly what the Purple Frog needed as glaze expanded beyond pottery painting. Lisa is now heading glaze's Creating Keepsakes Line. She works directly with funeral homes and hospice centers doing the delicate work of securing loved ones prints on silver charms. She is positive, fun, resourceful, motivated, organized, and super cute!

HeatherHeather - As a mom of four, Heather enjoys her breaks from home life and her time with fellow glazians. She has her months mapped out to coordinate with her husband's busy teacher schedule. We usually know weeks in advance when Heather will be working the floor. She does a great job working what have typically become busy Saturdays. She is awesome at running birthday parties for all ages and is another pro at getting handprints. Heather is also a "kiln room" girl. She faithfully comes in every Tuesday night to get the magic work done in the Chillin by the Kiln room.

AddyAddy - Here comes another girl who grew up at glaze... only she can say she has been a part of the glaze dream from day 1. She's the oldest daughter of Phil and Kristina. Addy and her siblings have worked at glaze on and off since the beginning, but now Addy actually works for a paycheck. She does a great job filling in when she can. As a freshman at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School and a JV Cheerleader, her time to work is limited. We are happy to have her smiling face and cheery personality when we can and look forward to her continued "employment" with us.

MattMatt - Here's a guy we all wish we would see more of. We hear on a regular basis, "Is Matt going to be here?" We understand that college is important, but we can't help wanting him here more at the studio. Matt still comes in when he can to help with the computers and recently asked to come back to work the floor on weekends. He has been a glazian for many years, and is currently attending school at UW-Milwaukee. Phil has always felt comfortable leaving Matt in charge of the kiln room when we are away, and now leaves the computers to Matt with the same confidence!

AmyAmy - What is there to say about the "Ultimate A-sis-tant"... she truly is amazing. Amy keeps track of just about everything coming in and going out of the studio. If it's a Birthday party, a to-go kit , or a special order, Amy is on task.  She is extremely talented at getting the perfect handprint, and if its wording you're looking for she can help with that as well.  It's more than likely she is so organized at glaze due to the many years of practice organizing her six children at home.

KatKat - Wouldn't we be lucky to have Kat here at glaze all the time... well, we are happy with the amount of time we do get to actually see Kat, but usually it's her incredible art we see instead. Kat is an art teacher at Homestead High School, and an extremely talented caricature artist as well. We have enjoyed having Kat working with us during the festivals and other special events. She is the artist responsible for our staff drawings, as well as most of the drawings on our website.  She fits in well with the staff and we do consider her "one of us". If she ever tires of high school we would put her talents to good use here (remember that, Kat!). As if that isn't enough to fill Kat's time, she is also skilled at a really unique type of art called pyrographies. You can find her website under our Links section to view her work.

ConnieConnie - This wonderful young woman has crossed the border from Illinois into Wisconsin when she married Ryan spring of 2011. Implementing events, nanny-ing, fashion illustrating, and working in a managerial position at a similar studio near Chicago are only a few of the talents and experiences Connie brings to glaze. She literally slipped right into place having started with an extensive background and familiarity of our industry. Connie is a go-to girl for custom work as she has been painting pottery for years. Connie has been gifted with many musical talents as well... maybe one of these nights in the Purple Frog...

NancyNancy Shortly after giving our friend, Nancy a tour of the new building she asked if glaze was hiring. The response: "For the right person, yes" led to her joining our glaze family. Sometimes I wonder who is more thrilled with the relationship... Nancy, glaze, or Nancy's husband David. He has commented how he loves that she loves her job. Well, we all love Nancy! She unselfishly lavishes her much needed "mothering" on the staff. Rarely does a day go by without her going completely out of her way to do something nice and unexpected for someone else. Having owned her own business and then working for 13 years at keeping an entire school organized, we are thrilled to be the recipients of all the skills and experience she brings with her to glaze. Fancy Nancy allows me to breathe easy knowing if there's something I missed- she almost always catches it!

KateKate - Her move to the Milwaukee area couldn't have worked out better timing-wise for us. She was just what our Clayground needed. Kate is a professional potter. Her work on the wheel is inspiring. She fell right into place teaching clay classes during glaze dayz and running the clay birthday parties. She has created several outstanding custom pieces already. One customer's request for a piece led Kate to completely start from scratch as she built 2 huge duck basins. Wow! Her calm, soft, sweet demeanor keep those of us a bit more high strung closer to the ground. So far she has never turned down one of my crazy tasks such as needing 500 frog magnets by tomorrow :) Her husband is a chef in Milwaukee... his job is what brought her to us and for that we are grateful!

DrewDrew - Now here is one cheery guy, always willing to help out. Drew is a senior at Cedarburg High School and involved with tennis and skiing. He works very hard on making each customer's experience an amazing one... because after all, "glazing is amazing!" He is well liked by the rest of the staff and really shows his dedication to glaze by quickly picking up extra shifts or stopping by to help out as needed. Drew is almost always the first to respond to texts - it's as if glaze is always on his mind. His hidden "Prince Eric" talents allow him to impress the kids during parties. Tennis pulls Drew away a little bit, but typically you'll find him there two evenings a week and weekends.

MeredithMeredith - For a few years now, Meredith has been a part-time glazian. You can typically find her in the studio on Mondays, though she's been known to sneak in before or after hours to roll clay, cut glass, etc. While much of her time is devoted to her three terrific school-aged children and husband, Meredith loves the flexibility of working on various projects from home. She helps with marketing and community outreach for the studio and absolutely loves being around the positive, creative staff & customers that glaze invariably attracts.

JanineJanine - aka: J9, brings to the studio many years of teaching experience and an impeccable fashion sense. Choosing to stay home when her sons were born, Janine wouldn’t allow herself to get out of touch with the grown up world. We mutually decided glaze would be a good place for Janine, and it is! We love having her multi-task in the kiln room and help out on the floor. We recently had to let J9 have some time off, but for good cause. Welcome Baby Boy, Witt to the glaze family!!! She will be back with us as soon as Witt will allow it.

SarahSarah - aka "lil Sarah" started with us right about the same time she started her freshman year at Homestead. She is another active teenager, but is willing to work the hours when she can. Sarah got her nickname being the 2nd Sarah glazian and well... because she is little. Our petite Lil Sarah is a super hard worker and pretty hilarious. I have heard many times from co-glazians how she just "cracks them up". We hired 'lil Sarah for many reasons, but one of the best is that she is only 15. We get to keep her around for years!

SarahSarah - She has graduated from Marquette and is off to a new adventure in the Chicago area, but we refuse to say goodbye. We’re going to leave Sarah here as part of our staff because we’re pretty certain she won’t be able to stay away and we wouldn’t want her to.

KayKay - Graphic designer extraordinaire! She’s the one responsible for all of the glaze graphics. She’s been doing it for years and after having once worked in the studio, she certainly knows what we’re all about and how to present us in brochures, ads, business cards, etc. If you need checker-borders or a cute purple frog, Kay will create it!

EllenEllen is the sergeant of smiles here at glaze. Rarely will you find her in anything but the cheeriest disposition. It's probably because she is so at home in glaze's creative environment. It's exactly where someone as talented as Ellen needs to be. Her love for the arts is reflected in her clothing designs, photography, singing, composing of music, and knitting. Ellen will go from teaching pre-school at Calvary Lutheran in Thiensville to being Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School’s full time Spanish teacher. She will continue to teach Wine & Dezign classes once a month and teach voice lessons to her students in our “Note Nook”.

EllieEllie - Beautiful red hair and a bright smile to match... that's our Ellie! Although she is actually far away at college in LaCrosse, she keeps in touch via email, texting and good old fashioned letter writing! I love that about her! She is a fantastic face painter and finds excitement in every project she is given. Her favorite pastime must be shopping, as you'll rarely find her in anything less than fun, cute, and trendy. I like to compete with Ellie when it comes to fun shoes though! She’ll be working with us when she’s home on college break and over the summer.
